07) Jim Kelly

The leader of the four-time AFC Champion Buffalo Bills of the 90s, Jim Kelly, is also a cancer survivor.

In early August, I received a response from one of the greatest quarterbacks of the 90s via his foundation, Jim Kelly. This Hall of Fame quarterback led the Buffalo Bills to four consecutive AFC Championships from the 1990-93 seasons. I wrote Kelly asking for advice as I recover from cancer, with Kelly battling cancer himself, and he sent me a signed photo with his advice inscribed to “Stay Tough, John”. I also took the time to donate a bit afterward to Hunter’s Hope, in the name of my uncle, Steve Vairin, a former Vietnam veteran, Boy Scouts leader, and NFL fan, who succumbed to cancer in 2016. It’s things like this my uncle would have wanted.
